Pre-procedure

For the majority of  hospital based procedures you will be asked to do the following:

  • Have nothing to eat or drink for 6 hours prior to your procedure
  • Arrive at the Prentice Women’s hospital, 250 E Superior St, 6th floor, 60-90 minutes before your procedure is scheduled to occur
  • It is essential that you have someone available to accompany you home after the procedure is completed
  • Notify your provider if you have a history of sleep apnea or use a CPAP device.
  • Certain medications will need to be stopped or adjusted days or hours before your surgery. If you are any of the following medications please discuss this with your provider at the time your procedure is scheduled. These medicaitons include:
    • Diabetic medications such as insulin, Metformin, Glucophage, Glycerbride
    • Blood thinners such as Lovenox, Fragmin, Xarelto, Coumadin or Heparin
    • Anti-platelet medicaitons such as Plavix, Ticlid or Persantine
  • You should stop taking the following medications for 7-10 days in advance of your procedure:
    • Aspirin
    • Ibuprofen
    • Vitamin E and K containing poducts
    • Herbal supplements
    • Known blood thinners, such as Lovenox, Fragmin, Xarelto, Coumadin or Heparin. If you take any of this class of medications, please discuss with your provider and make a plan to stop or adjust your medications prior to your procedure
    • Anti-platelet medications such as Plavix, Ticlid, Pletal and Effient

The hospital staff will contact you on the day prior to your surgery (this would be Friday if you have a Monday procedure) to confirm the time you should arrive for your surgery. They will also review the arrival and departure protocol that you will be dealing with on the day of your procedure. If you have not recieved a call by 5pm the day prior to surgery, missed a call or would liek to talk to the pre-op nursing staff, please call them before 8pm at 312-471-0610.

You may be asked to visit the PreOp Clinic before your scheduled surgery> The PreOp Clinic of Northwestern Memorial Hospital will contact you to schedule an appointment. You will then need to present to:

You may be asked to have blood testing prior to your surgery. If this is recommended present to the:

On the day of your surgery:

  • Do not wear jewelry or have nail covering on.
  • Wear loose comfortable clothing
  • Do not bring valuables tothe hospital
  • Remember to bring a photo ID and your medical insurance card
  • Bring a complete list of your medications, herbal supplements and drug allergies
